Baptiste Veistroffer: “In a breakaway, you have to believe”

“Making those kinds of efforts is in my nature. I just enjoyed myself and thought things through, because in modern cycling it’s no longer enough to just push on the pedals — you also have to think. I had a plan, I put it into action, and I was rewarded for that work.
But it’s also a reward for all the breakaways last year, and earlier this season in Australia or the day before yesterday at the Muscat Classic. Once you go into a breakaway, you have to believe in it. Maybe I was the only one, but I kept believing and it worked. When I crossed the finish line, I mainly thought about all the work done in training over the years, during winter and in the rain.
I’ve taken the leader’s jersey — what’s taken is taken. I know it will be hard for me to keep it tomorrow, but it gives me immense pleasure to be able to wear it.”
