Discover the route of 10th edition

January 16 th 2019 - 11:00

Oman has captivated and surprised the international peloton year after year. The Tour of Oman, held in February, has something for sprinters, punchers and climbers alike. It has earned a special place on the pro cycling calendar thanks to the sneak peeks it gives of a season packed with promise and uncertainty.

The route of the 2019 edition has enough variety to showcase the abilities of different types of riders. Sprint trains will joust to position their fast men in the first stage between Al Sawadi Beach and an unprecedented finale on Suhar Corniche, where the leader's jersey awaits the winner at the end of a 1,300m finishing straight on the seafront.

Sprinters will take a step back in the following two stages. Royal Cavalry Oman will make its debut in the race as the start of stage 2, a 156,5km to trek Al-Bustan —familiar terrain for aggressive punchers. A leg-breaking mix of climbs, descents and narrow roads in the final 30 kilometres will thin the pack. Nathan Haas won a ten-man sprint here last year. Those who come up short in Al-Bustan will have a chance to make amends the next day, with a stage starting from Shati Al Qurum, which is also making its debut in the race. It will be another opportunity for punchers to shine, with a summit finish on the 2.8km long, 6.5% Qurayyat climb, where last year's Paris–Tours champion Søren Kragh Andersen took victory in 2017.
Stage 4 between Yiti (Al Sifah) and the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (131km) will test the riders' speed and stamina on the triple climb up Al-Jabal Street before the finish.

Wednesday 20 February will feature the queen stage of the Tour of Oman for the ninth year running. The peloton will roll out of Samayil with the fearsome Green Mountain looming on the horizon. The suffering will only end after a 5.7km climb at a gradient of 10.5%.
Sprinters will get another day in the sun in the closing stage, a 135.5km romp from Al Mouj Muscat to Matrah Corniche.
